Managing for HEALTHY FORESTS Symposium

FRIDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2011
FRIDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2011
Scientists, environmental managers and community come together to discuss current research investigating effects of climate change on our struggling woodlands and forests. The Western Australian State Centre of Excellence for Forest Health cordially invites you to join this Symposium.

Southwest Western Australia is considered by many climate scientists to be 'a global guinea pig' with regard to climate change. Over the last 30 years, this region has experienced a decline of 14% in rainfall and a temperature increase of 0.45°C.

The majority of current climate change models agree on a continuation of this trend and project a reduction in rainfall ranging up to 20%, and an increase in temperature ranging up to 2°C by 2030 (40% and 5°C by 2070). Such changes will have a significant impact on our natural ecosystems as it is highly likely many species may not have time to adapt to such changes. In southwest Western Australia, we are already seeing significant tree declines in urban, peri-urban, forest and woodland ecosystems as a result of drought. These declines will only increase in severity, extent and impact if we have another dry season, as predicted.

In order to learn to live with a changing climate and to mitigate its impacts on our forests and woodlands, maintaining biodiversity and the ecosystem services they provide, we need: (a) an excellent understanding of the physical, social and policy processes involved, (b) management options available to us, and (c) the will to act sooner rather than later.
